Mardeck Ltd. and Rozansky & Kay Co. plan to build a 309-room hotel and office building on a six-acre tract on Rte. 355 at Halpine Road between the Twinbrook Metro station and Rockville Pike. Construction is expected to begin next year.

The Northern Virginia Builders Association is conducting a preapprentice carpentry program for 15 persons. They will get 240 hours of instruction over a six-week period and then be placed with contractors and builders for 12 weeks of on-the-job-experience.

Tavern Square Corp., a subsidiary of Eugene Simpson & Brother Inc., recently opened the 24-unit Evergreen Square office condominium at Evergreen Lane and Little River Turnpike in Annandale.

Carl H. Kneesi and Kenneth O. Thompson have been elected senior vice presidents of Weaver Bros. Inc., a real estate and mortgage banking firm based in Chevy Chase. Kneesi directs the firm's commercial sales, leasing and management. Thompson is responsible for land acquisition and development.

Forty-four houses have been sold in Cherrywood of Olney, a community being developed by MCD Enterprises. Prices begin under $100,000. Homes have three and four bedrooms. The site, just west of Georgia Avenue and south of Olney, will have a total of 450 detached houses and 156 town houses. The first section of 55 detached houses is expected to be completed this summer.

Construction of the Latrobe, a high-rise rental apartment building developed by the National Housing Partnership at 1325 15th St. NW, is near completion. Rents range from $352 to $600 a month.

Gregory Construction Co. of Manassas recently erected a 10,000-square-foot metal storage building at 766 N. Howard St., Alexandria -- in less than 30 days. The building is being used by Bush Construction Co. of Norfolk as a staging area for the rehabilitation of the large Shirley Duke rental apartment project in Alexandria.
