Sales of new homes in the Washington area dropped a whopping 24 percent from April to May, according to Housing Data Reports, local real estate experts.

The 2,100 new single-family homes, town houses and condominiums sold in May also represented a 5 percent decline from the level in May 1981.

"This drop-off is attributed primarily to the depressed and uncertain mood of the consumer to continued recession news," HDR concluded.

In addition, traffic continued to be weak in the first two weeks of June, the report added.

The group noted, however, that there were 5,600 single-family and town house sales in the first five months of this year, the same as last year.
