George Washington's basketball team will shoot for its fifth straight victory today when the Colonials face Eastern Collegiate Basketball League rival Duquesne at 3 o'clock at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena.
During their winning streak, the Colonials (7-4) have defeated ECBL opponents Pittsburgh and Penn State to run their league record to 2-0. They are tied with Rutgers and Villanova for first place in the league's Eastern Division. GW and Rutgers meet Thursday night at Smith Center.
In Friday night's 91-88 overtime win at Penn State, George Washington scored eight unanswered points in the final 1:06 of regulation to tie the game at 76. A tip-in by Les Anderson with four seconds remaining put the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Colonials broke a 78-78 tie by scoring six straight points on baskets by Andersons, Tyrone Howze and Mike Zagardo.
Howze scored all six of his points in overtime after replacing John Holloran, who fouled out with 1:39 left in regulation. Holloran, who led all scorers with 26 points, finished the contest with 1,023 career points to become the 16th Colonial to surpass the 1,000-point mark.
Duquesne, 1-2 in the Western Division of the ECBL and 6-6 overall, is led by senior guard Norm Nixon, who is averaging over 21 points a game.
