Kenwood of Baltimore County raced to the team championship today in the 15th annual Maryland National Guard Scholastic track meet at the Baltimore National Guard Armory.
Washington-area schools competed at less than full strenght as most would-be major entrants took part in the previous day's CYO track meet at the University of Maryland. A Maryland state rule prohibits a student from participating in two meets in a two-day period.
John F. Kennedy High of Silver Spring gave the Washington area its only first place, winning the mile relay in the three minutes 39.9 seconds. Running for Kennedy were Greg Rosenfeld, Brian Godette, Kevin Ray and Steve Cohen.
The Washington area did gain several second places. Milton Hargrove of Bladensburg finished second in the 60-yard dash in 6.7, while Keith Gilger of Crossland's throw of 53-feet-2 1/4 was good for second in the shot put.
Others gaining runner-up finishes were: High Point's Nuben Ealey in the 1,000-yard run (2:27.7), DuVal's Wayne Madison in the high jump (6-2), Central's mile relay team of Alan Drew, and John Driessnack (3:40.7), and Friendly's two-mile relay team of Paul Schaeffer, Gordon Harman, Sean Murphy and Mark Pyke (8:29.3).
