Boston coach Tommy Heinsohn insisted the San Antonio Spurs used an illegal rose defense Friday night, but it didn't matter to his Celtics. They simply shot over it for baskets.
"Boston hit everything from the outside," San Antonio coach Doug Moe said while denying Heinsohn's charge after the Celtics' 103-90 National Basketball Association victory before a crowd of 13,065 at Boston Garden.
"I've been hearing that they're been shooting lousy, but they sure burned us," Moe said after the Celtics hit on 42.of 83 floor shots for a marksmanship of 47 per cent.
"San Antonio plays the passing lanes," Heinsohn said. "They sit back and wait for you. It's a zone and they're very good at it. They disguise it very well. It forced us to take the outside shot."
"Heinsohn doesn't know what he's looking at," Moe said. "It's an idiotic statement."
Jo Jo White led the Celtics with 28 points, while backcourt partner John Havlicek hit for 25. Center Dave Cowens, playing in his fifth game after a two-month leave of absence, came off the bench and had seven points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes.
