Top-seeded Guillermo Villas and third-seeded Vitas Gerulaitis advanced to the quarterfinals of the $100,000 Ocean City International tennis tournament today.

Vilas defeated Soviet star Alex Metrevelli. 7-6, 6-3. Vilas took the first-set tie breaker, 5-3, and after a brief delay in the second set because of lightning problems, finished Metrevelli.

Gerulaitis had his hands full with Charlie Pasarell before winning, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Gerulaitis won the first set. Fasarell double-faulted twice in the 10th game for the set's only break.

In action Tuesday night, fourth-seed Bob Lutz disposed of Butch Walts, 6-4, 6-2: Cliff Richey slipped past Billy Scanlon, 7-6, 7-6: Jan Kodes knocked off Tim Wilkinson, 7-5, 6-2, and Jon Tiriac won by default because Victor Pecci did not appear.

Elsewhere, at Salisburry, Md., Perry Wright upset second-seeded Francisco Gonzalez, 7-6, 6-0, at the U.S. Tennis Association National Amateur Indoor Championships.

Third-seeded Matt Mitchell defeated Roger Guedes, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

In women's singles, third-seeded Brabara Jordon defeated Stanford teammate Dianne Morrison 6-3, 6-3, while sixth-seeded Sherry Acker was upset by Gretchen Galt, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
