The first double-header of the spring point-to-point steeple-chase season comes up Saturday with race meetings at Davidsonville, Md. and Sperryville, Va.

In Davidsonville, the Marlborough Hunt will launch the Maryland season with an eight-race card at Roedown Farm starting at 11 a.m. In Sperryville, the Virginia spring circuit goes into its third week with a nine race program starting at 11:15 a.m., sponsored by the Rappahannock Hunt.

Rappahannock's Thornton Hill course is considered one of the sternest tests of the steeplechase circuit. Up the side of a mountain, down into the valley and then a sharp turn into an endless stretch - it all adds up to a test of endurance for both horse and rider. The fact that record entries are listed for each race this year attests to the excellent condition of point-to-point racing in Virginia.

The 2 1/2 mile Ben Venue over timber and the 2-mile Durant Hill over hurdles, cofeature the Rappahannock card. The first is part of the Seven Corners spring series, while the latter is race No. 3 for the First Colony Life Trophy, another spring-long racing series.

At the Marlborough meeting the featured 3-mile Roedown Cup is the first of six races this year for the Governor's Cup.
