Starlit Aquatic Club of Fairfax will be the host for the Region 11 Amateur Athletic Union short-course open swimming championship today through Sunday.
More than 400 swimmers, aged 12-24, from eight states will be entered in 30 events, with each participant hoping to qualify for the National AAU championships in Canton, Ohio, April 6-9. Starlit is located at 9401 Little River Turnpike.
The field includes Bonnie Glasgow of Baltimore, ranked No. 17 in the world in the 400-yard individual medley and 24-year-old Ellen Mangel of Homewood, Md., ranked No. 13 in backstroke.
Other participants will be Starlit's Betsy Rapp, seeded first in the 100-yard butterfly; Capitol East's Robert Murray, seeded No. 1 in the 100-yard Freestyle, and Brenda Borgh of Newton Square, Pa., who placed sixth in the 400-meter freestyle event in the 1976 Olympics.
Each day's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will run through most of the evening.
Today's events include the 100-yard butterfly, the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard meddley relay.
Finals in today's events are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
