McKinley Tech's mile-relay team sped home in a meet record in the day's final event yesterday to give the Trainers the team title in the Eastern Relays at Spingarn.
Ronnie Payne, James King, Donnie Payne and Barry Tolliver were clocked in 3:21.1 in the next-to-last heat and then watched Spingarn finish last in the final (or fast) heat to assure McKinley the title.
"We should have been in the fast heat," said McKinley coach McClint Brown, who saw his quartet shave three seconds off the existing record. "I told them they were in a heat by themselves. They had to run for time . . . they couldn't let up (because of lack of competition)."
Spingarn won the distance medley to pull into a tie with McKinley entering the mile relay.
McKinely earlier posted victories in the 440 and sprint-medley relays. Spingarn's only other victory came in the two-mile, H.D. Woodson set a meet record in the 880 with a clocking of 1:28.4.
Central's six-girl team earned victories in the first three events and then held on to edge two-time defending champion Coolidge, 18-17, for the team title.
Central's 880 team of Juanita Austin, Melissa Hill, Renee Keck and Portia Holmes set a meet record of 1:45.0. Central also posted wins in the 440 (50.3) and the sprint medley (1:50.8). feet-6 inches for the best individual performance.
Running events start today at 3:15 p.m.
