Raise A King, a rail hugger early, angled out for room in the stretch and rushed past the pacesetters to win the $25,000-added Terrapin Handicap at Bowie by 3 1/2 lengths over Whatsyour-pleasure yesterday. Gallant Bob drifted out on the turn but managed to grab third position. Raise A King's time of 1:09 for the six furlongs with the fastest of the current meeting.
Raise A King was in close quarters at the start and Irish-born Johnny Ruane allowed him to settle into stride in the next-to-last position. Meanwhile, Roman Monk opened a clear lead, followed closely by Whatsyourpleasure, with Gallant Bob in good striking position.
Straightened for home, Roman Monk called it a day as Whatsyour-pleasure rushed to the lead. Raise A King came off the rail at the three-sixteenths pole and accelerated rapidly.
After the race, assistant trainer Andy Desernio said, "This horse was cut out to be special. He has some knee problems but the boss (trainer Allen Jerkens) keeps him together."
Raise A King returned $5.80 to win and coupled with Whatsyourpleasure - topped a 2-1 exacts worth $18.60.
The crowd of 11,040 bet $1,288,511 continuing Bowie's climb in both statistics.
