Redskin coach George Allen said today he will hold Mike Thomas out of a Saturday's preseason football game against the Packers because the running back's sore left leg has still not completely healed.

"He's the first back I've had since I've been coaching who's only had three days of practice at this point in the season," Allen said.

"I'm concerned that he hasn't had a chance to get his timing down and that he's had no work."

Thomas, who has not played in the 1977 exhibition season, said he thought he would be able to return to practice next week. "It's the same problem, the hamstring," he said. "I was working real hard last week, but it just started to bother me again so I'm trying to let it rest. I'd rather heal it up now than get it hurt and miss time in the (regular) season. I'll be all right."

Meanwhile, a crowd of 1,500 showed up at the Dickinson College field as the Redskins held fan appreciation day for the residents of Carlisle. A Marine Corps band and drill team entertained the crowd for 30 minutes before the Redskins went into their regular practice.
