City Of Gold, a 4-year-old gelding running in claiming events last month, continued his upward climb yesterday when he won the featured Largo Purse at Bowie by nearly two lenghts over Salty Chat.
Jallad would up third, another three lengths behind the place horse.
The winner ran the mile and a sixteenth allowance race in 1.46 and paid $4.60 to win as the favorite.
Jallad was first out of the gate, joined quickly by Pegasus Pete. The pair matched strides in the run down the backstrech and were joined near the stretch turn by City of Gold, with Salty Chat looking for room as they straightened away.
Sally Chat finally got clear with an eighth of a mile to go but was beaten by the winner in the run to the wire.
City of Gold, owned by John D. Marsh of Gainesville, Ga., has won three races this year. The son of Tambourine shows a third place finish in the Heagerty Stakes as a 3-year-old.
Robert Gilbert was the riding star of the afternoon, posting three wins, Gilbert scored with Missed Approach in the third. Parden in the fourth and Flame The Wind in the ninth.
The attendance was 6.240 and $707,183 went though the mutuel machines.
