The Trempel Lipizzans, American stallions descended from the world famous Royal Lipizzans of Austria will perform their famous "Airs Above Ground" during each of the nine evening shows of the Washington International Horse Show beginning Saturday.

Offspring of 20 Royal Lipizzans imported here in 1958 by Tempel Smith, the American Lipizzans also are famous for their classical dressage. The "Airs" routine consists of three main movements - the capriolel, the levade and the courbette.

In the capriole, the horse leaps into the air, drawing his forelegs under his chest and at the height of his leap, kicks out violently with the hind legs. In the courbette, he balances on his hind legs and jumps, keeping his hind legs together and the forelegs off the ground. In the levade, the horse maintains a haunched position at a 45-degree angle to the ground.

Other highlights of the show include the prestigious International Open jumping competition with teams from Canada, Great Britain, Germany and United States at afternoon and evening performances.

The four-member U.S. team includes two members of the country's gold-medal Pan American team. Willaim (Buddy) Brown and Michael Matz. Brown also won a silver in individual competition and Matz, a bronze.

Another team member, Joe Fargis of Vienna, was a member of the winning American team in Prix des Nations competition in Canada late this summer. Conrad Homfeld, a teammate of Fargis in Canada, completes the American team.
