North Carolina A&T, led by the running of William Joyner, captured a 34-10 victory over Howard today in a Mid Eastern-Eastern Athletic Conferene game.
Howard, which lost its fourth game in six outings, put itself in a hold when Beeman Veasley fumbled away the opening kickoff. The Aggies drove to the Howard 13-yard-line, before a held-goal attempt by Nolan Jones fell short and was downed by a Howard player on the two. Four plays later Bison punter Howard Ward was brced to run out of the end zone by a heavy rush and was tackled at the four.
ON second down. Agggie quarterback Ellswoorth Turner scored to give A&T 6-0 lead.
With less than two minutututtes remaining in the first quarte. A&T defessive back Thomas Warren picked off Brian Thomas pass.
Turner directed the Aggies from their 47 to the Howard 15 on five plays before he was thrown for a 10-yard loss by defensive tackle James s Hunter. Jones booted a 43-yard field goal for a 10-0 margin with 56 seconds remaining in the first period.
Howard scores with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, driving 34 yards on 10 plays, aided by two A&T penalties. Ward kicked a 40-yard field goal to make it 10-3.
Howeever, before halftime. A&T's Lon Harris, the smallest manna on the tield at 5-foot-7, 165 pounds, returned a Ward punt 40 yardss for a first and goal on the Bison four. Turner rolled out, jazzily outstepped two defenders and raced into the end zone for his second touchdown.
Joyner took over in the second half, running for 14 yards following the second-half kickoff. The 60-yard drive ended in a 49-yard pass play for a touchdown, Turner to Frank Carr.
Thomas, who replaced freshman Ronal Wilson as the starting quarterback for Howard last week against Virginia State, hit wingback Steve Wllson for a 64-yard touchdown and the Bison's final points.
Joyner responded with runs of 3.29 and 28 yards before Turner iumbled away the football at the Howard 25. But the Bison were unable to capitalize.
Jones added a 47-yard field goal with 7:01 remaining in the fourth quarter and Joyner took a pitchout from Turner an draced 46 yards up the middle for the final score.
"We didn't have any intensity." said Howard coach Doug Porter. "No one individual made any mistakes that lost the came, we just played roorly as a team."
The victory was the fourth consccutive for A&T. now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in MBAC [WORD ILLEGIBLE]. Howard is 1-3 in the conference.
