The University of Maryland basketball team will try to capture its own holiday tournament for the sixth time when the seventh annual event opens Wednesday at Cole Field House.

The 20th-ranked Terrapins begin the two-day Maryland Invitational Tournament with a 7 p.m. contest against Western Kentucky. St. John's meets Georgia Tech at 9.

The consolation and championship games will begin at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively, on Thursday.

Maryland, 7-1, is coming off a 99-77 victory over Army. Greg Manning, a freshman guard who has played a key role in the Terrapin's success thus far, had 25 points against the Cadets.

The fifth annual Rotary Holiday Tournament, hosted by three-time defending champion George Mason, also gets under way Wednesday.

Rutgers-Camden meets Lock Haven at 7 p.m. with the Patriots, 1-5, taking on Lebanon Valley at 9. The game for third place begins Thursday at 7 p.m. with the championship at 9 p.m.

Georgetown, 6-2 after four straight wins, travels to Madison Square Garden Tuesday for a 7 p.m. encounter with 13th-ranked Holy Cross. The contest opens the 26th annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Holiday Festival Tournament.

Alabama, ranked 18th, plays Princeton at 9 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be played Thursday at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively.

Derrick Jackson had 28 points in the latest Hoya victory, a 61-55 double-overtime thriller against St. Joseph's.

Virginia will meet Temple at 7 p.m. Thursday in New Orleans in the opening game of the Sugar Bowl Tournament. Auburn goes against Southern Cal at 9 p.m.

The consolation and championship games follow Friday at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively.

In other games this week, Brown is at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Morehouse meets UDC at Dunbar and Navy visits Valparaiso on Thursday and George Washington is at Virginia Tech and Navy travels to Butler on Friday.

Highlighting the national schedule this week is Saturday's Notre Dame at Kentucky game (4 p.m., WRC-T-4).
