North Carolina A&T scored 12 of the last 14 points of the game, all on free throws, last night to register a 70-58 victory over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference struggle.
A&T, 16-8 overall and 10-1 in the MEAC, clinched at least a tie for the regular-season conference title. Howard fell to 14-5 and 8-2 in conference play.
Howard Nathaniel Speight sank four free throws to tie the score at 56 with just under four minutes remaining. Then A&T's James Sparrow scored on a breakaway layup to give the winners the lead for good.
The hosts went into their delay game, forcing the Bison to foul. Howard was hurt by a double technical foul called on Coach A. B. Williamson and an additional technical on guard Gerald Gaskins. A&T sank all five free throws to take a 68-56 lead.
Howard's Nathaniel Speight sank left in the first half before A&T went on a 10-1 tear, getting six of those points from former Spingarn High school star Joe Brawner.Howard then scored six of the half's final eight points to tie it at 30-30.
Balanced scoring in the second half allowed the Bison to open a 52-46 advantage with 8-59 left. Then the hosts went on another tear for eight points with Sparrow and Brawner evenly splitting the points, and led 54-52. L. J. Pipkin's 10-footer gave the Aggies a 56-52 lead to set up the final parade tot be foul line.
Brawner led all scorers with 21 points and Sparrow added 17. Howard was paced by Mike Nettles' 13 points while Gerald Glover was held to 12, six below his average.
