Reds give up on Blue! Maravich's year in jeopardy! But first the big news: Kilmer to wed!
Having spared the broken hearts until Valentine's and safely passed, now we can report that Billy the K. and his Delta stewardess from Georgia, Sandy Schott, will become man and wife Monday in Las Vegas.Good friends since 1973, they will exchange vows in "a little chapel - not the Candlelight" with reception at the Aladdin; second marriage for each. Don't know whether this means Redskin buddies Jake Scott and Jim Kiick, who lived at Kilmer's in Reston last season, will have to find new quarters . . .
Bob Howsam, president of Cincinntai's National League contenders, says the Reds have terminated all efforts to reshape the deal for Vida Blue and will not take Commissioner's Bowie Kuhn to court over his veto of the original swap of first baseman Dave Revering and $1.75 million to the Oakland A's for the ace left-hander.
"We have tried to alter the trade through a talk with Charlie Finley of the A's, but without success," said Howsam. "Further, we do not wish to pursue the trade through the courts . . . Our belief (is that) baseball has been in the courts too much . . . The fan wants us to play baseball and that is what we intend to do."
The Reds, Howsam said, "welcome Dave Revering back to our roster. He will have every opportunity to make the club at Tampa during spring training. We thank Vida Blue for his patience and the fact that he was interested in coming to the Reds."
Now, of course, former Indianapolis slugger Revering will hit 40 homers and bat in 120 runs for Cincinnati . . .
