Howard University, loser of its last four games, hopes for a comeback tonight when it faces Maryland Eastern Shore (2-10 in the MEAC asd 7-19 overall) in a first-round game of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Tournament at Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum at 9 p.m.
In other first-round games, Delaware State (5-7 and 10-14) plays South Carolina State (5-7 and 15-11) at 1 p.m. and N.C. Central (2-10 and 6-19) meets Morgan State (9-3 and 13-11) at 7. Conference-winner North Carolina A&t 11-1 and 18-8) earned a bye and will meet hte Delaware State-S.C. State winner Friday at 9, following the other semifinal.
The championship game will be played Saturday at 9. The women's MEAC title, game between S.C. State and Morgan State will be played at 7.
Howard (8-4, 14-8) has not played in the past two weeks. Since losing to A&T, 94-85, in double overtime seven games ago, the Bison have been plagued by turnovers, poor shooting and what coach A. B. Williamson calls "mental mistakes."
Gerald Glover, who was selected MEAC Player of the Year, is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game. Glover needs 49 points to become Howard's leading career scorer.
George Mason (4-6 and 8-16) will also attempt to make up for a disappointing season when it opposes the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (4-6 and 13-11) in a first-round game of the Mason Dixon tournament tonight at 9 at Towson State.
The University of Baltimore (4-6 and 10-15) meets Frostburg State (1-9 and 4-19) in other opening-round.
Mount St. Mary's (7-3 and 14-9) faces the winner of the Baltimore-Frostburg game Friday at 7. Host Towson State 10-0 and 22-3) takes on the other first-round victor at 9.
The championship game will be Saturday at 8.
In the Maryland Junior College tournament beginning today at Montgomery-Rockville. Anne Arundel (27-1) faces Catonsville (13-10) at 1 p.m., defending champion Community College of Baltimore (24-2) meets Frederick (5-15) at 3. Allegany (16-6) plays Essex (15-9) at 5 and Charles (16-6) goes against Montgomery-Rockville (16-9) at 7.
The semifinals will be played Friday at 6 and at 8. The title game will be held Saturday at 7:30.
In the women's JC tournament at Catonsville tonight. Prince George's (15-2) plays Cecil at 1, Hagerstown meets Anne Arundel at 3, Allegany plays Catonsville at 5. Harford takes on Essex at 5 and Allegany faces Catonsville at 7 in first-round games.
The semifinals will be held Friday at 7 and 9 with the title game Saturday at 1.
