The Bowie track favored outside horses last Saturday when Bold Brat ran in the Barbara Fritchie Handicap for fillies and mares. So jockey Jim Moseley wisely made the most of her blazing speed by taking her to the middle of the track. The $18.40 win mutuel on the speedy daughter of Boldnesian was a surprise. Her figure off that race makes her as tough as any female sprinter around.
The ride by Herb Hinojosa on Strange Proposal in winning Tuesday's feature race had horsemen talking. The veteran jockey picked his way through horses throughout, then put up a strong finish to nose out two more highly rated challengers. About 15 years ago, Hinojosa was the hottest rider in the country until he severed the tendons in his right hand in an accident.
Lexington Park is remembered as the winner of several stakes races at Bowie. The 11-year-old geldings has been up and down the claiming ladder and today runs for $14,500.
Take The Pledge runs in today's Campbell with a feathery 114 pounds. The 6-year-old gelding is trained by the respected Charles Hardy, who had him looking sharp and on his toes for last month's Native Dancer Handicap. Even with On The Sly in today's feature, Take The Pledge is expected to receive some strong backing.
Trainer Lee McHenry, who conditions Prince Of Israel, one of the choices in today's sixth race, tells of the arrival of a 2-year-old filly that is the daughter of an Eastern European stallion. Asked about the little-known stud, McHenry said, "I can only tell you he is highly regarded in Buda-pest."
