Deux Coup, the hottest horse at the close of the Dixie steeplechase circuit with victories in the Pepsi-Sandhills Cup at Southern Pines, N.C., and in the Tanglewood Cup at Clemmons, S.C., on successive weekends, tops the field of eight in Saturday's $6,000 Hurdle Handicap at the Virginia Gold Cup meeting at the Broadview course near Warrenton.
Mrs. Miles Valentine's hihgly regarded 6-year-old will carry top weight of 156 pounds in the 2 1/8-mile cofeature on the six-race card that beings at 2:30 p.m. Tommy Skiffington will handle the Burley Cocks' "come-from-behind" chaser, whose major 1977 victory came in the Grand National at Fair Hill in September.
Straight and True, the 1976 Eclipse Award winner, has been assigned 147 pounds while Tall Award will carry 148 and Don Panta 147. Rounding out the field will be Pamphlet, Clover Over, Horst and Blue Nearco, undefeated on the point-to-point circuit this spring.
Eleven timber horses are scheduled to take the 4 p.m. flag in the Gold Cup, with Bel Esprit II and Manco Capac cofavored in the four-mile, 22-jump marathon that carries a purse of $7,500.
