Randy Waterman brought home two winners yesterday at the Rappahannock Hunt meeting at Hornton Hill to win the Virginia point-to-point steeplechase rider-of-the-year award.
The 29-year-old transplanted New Jerseyite who moved to Upperville last fall to be nearer steeplechase racing, turned in victories with Champerty in the Ben Venue timber race and with Joe Finn in the Durant Hill hurdle race to end the season with 60 points.
Going into yesterday's final meeting of the season, Waterman held a two point margin over Washington's Phil Chewning. But Chewning's only appearance before a Rappahannock crowd of close to 5,000 was to accept the First Colony Life Trophy for the five victories turned in by his Blue Nearco during the spring-long battle for the hurdle championship. Blue Nearco did not run yesterday, and Chewning's other standby, Kelly's Hero, was sore.
Waterman's Champerty had an eight-length margin over Peter Winants' First Jim in a 2 1/2-mile ownerrider event. Winants earlier had received the Col. Harry E. Ruhsam Memorial Challenge Plate as the winner of the Old Fashioned point-to-point competition during the spring with First Jim.
Estremadura won the Seven Corners Challenge Trophy title, turning in four victories over the 10-race series to finish with 20 points 10 more than defending champion Randy Rouse's Cousin Wes.
Estremadura, the Virginia-bred a 9-year-old trained by Ridgley White of Middleburg, nosed out Tom Moffitt's Bel Esprit II for the Virginia Timber Horse of the Year award selected by sportswriters. Handled by its owner, the Gustav gelding won at Warrenton, Piedmont, Middleburg and Oatlands. Bel Esprit II turned in major victories at Oatlands and Blue Ridge and was third in two earlier races.
