At the Dinner of Champions here last week, an original Milton Caniff sketch of dinner chairman Sonny Jurgensen fetched $400 at auction for the cause of fighting multiple sclerosis.

At a school assembly recently, Ron McDole obliged with autographs but told the youngsters they'd need three McDoles to swap for a Joe Theismann -- and eight McDoles for a Sonny Jurgensen.

And now -- Sonny Jurgensen has been charged with driving "under the influence" in the District. D.C. police said the Redskin quarterback become WTOP-TV-9 sportscaster was stopped near the Mayflower Hotel early yesterday and advised not to drive, but drove off and was arrested several blocks away by officer Kevin J. Griffith. Jurgensen was taken to the third district station, booked and released (without a breathalyzer test) on recognizance for a Superior Court appearance June 21; he also faces a hearing by the Department of Motor Vehicles, police added.

Jurgensen, then an active player, was arrested by Maryland State police in 1972, with charges dropped when he promised to attend the country's "driving while intoxicated" school to learn why you shouldn't...

The National Basketball Association brass are gathered in Coronado, Calif., and considering 11 rules changes. Among them: clearer definition of the taboo zone defense, elimination of hand checking, addition of a two-man taxi squad to the 11-player active roster -- and addition of a third referee for all games. Said Kansas City's Joe Axelson, chairman of the competition and rules committeee: "Every serious fight that ever started in this league began with undetected contact away from the ball. We have the rules; we are proposing that we get an extra set of eyes to enforce them.."

And here's hoping Kermit Washington and Kevin Kunnert keep their elbows out of each other's way now that they are Boston Celtic teammates. Leave it to Red Auerbach to bring together the Houston Rocket center and the former Laker forward whose tussle ended in the Rudy T disaster. As we recollect the aftermath, while many of the Rockets were saying Washington should have the book flung at him, Kunnert was calling it just the breaks of basketball, so evidently they'll get along...
