Youth clashes head on in the third round of the Maryland State Golf Association championship this morning at Talbot Country Club.

Wayne DeFrancesco of Lakewood and Jack Skilling of Chevy Chase, both former juniors of the year in the Washington, D.C., area, scored two easy victories yesterday and the winner of their match is favored to reach the 36-hole final tomorrow.

DeFrancesco, 20, a junior at LSU who transferred from Wake Forest, played only 25 holes yesterday, ousting Tom Cumberpatch of Columbia, 7 and 6, and comedalist Will Shanahan, Talbot club champion, 6 and 5.

Skilling eliminated Regan O'Rourke, Montgomery Village, 1 up, and Howard Swartz, Turf Valley, 6 and 5.

Marty West, 1973 and '74 state champion, appears the favorite in the lower bracket. West, of Columbia Country Club, beat Mark Bubes, Woodmont, 6 and 5.In the afternoon West lost three of the first four holes to Dan Raybon of Montgomery Village but was four under par in the remaining holes of a 3-and-2 victory.

Bobby Viner of Manor beat comedalist Chuck Ebener, Country Club of Maryland, 1 up, and Richard Kress, Woodholme, 2 and 1.

In the biggest upset of the day John Kyle of Congressional beath Dave King of Bethesda, 1 up in a second-round match. King missed a 3 1/2-foot putt on the final green.
