Sally Voss of Congressional County Club collected three birdies finished with 75 and won the qualifying medal in the Maryland State Women's Amateur golf tournament yesterday at Woodmont's South Course.
Voss, 20, has won the Women's District Golf Association title and the San Francisco City championship this spring.
A long hitter, she rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 third hole. On the seventh, another par 5, she reached the green in two and came up an inch short on her eagle bid. Voss scored her final birdie on the lake-guarded 12th hole, pumping her eight-iron tee shot one foot from the hole. Voss was out in 38 and back in 37.
Voss plays former WDGA champ Rebecca Doman of Argyle in today's opening round of four days of match play.
Jane Mason of Snow Hill, Md., who won this event in 1965 and 1974, was cruising along at one under par but took an 8 on the par-4 ninth hole and tied for second at 77 with WDGA finalist Diane Rankin of Montgomery Village.
Mary Ann Battle, the champion for the last two years, was unable to defend this year because of back injury.
Mrs. William B. Alexander of Green Spring shot 85 to win the Maryland Women's Seniors championship, an 18 hole event held in conjunction with the Women's Amateur.
