Sally Voss birdied the 15th and 16th holes and eliminated Rebecca Doman, 4 and 2; Jane Mason eased past Jennifer MacCurrach, 5 and 4, and Diane Rankin bested Tina Marlowe by the same score in first-round matches of the Maryland State Women's amateur golf tournament yesterday at Woodmonths South course.

Voss, Women's District Golf Association champion, would be playing in the U.S. Women's Open at Indianapolis this week if she had taken one less stroke in qualifying.

Voss of Congressional, took a 2-up lead with par at the 10th and went 3 up at 13. After losing the 14th. Voss hit her tee shot 15 inches from the cup on the 15th for a conceded birdie and sank a 15-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 16th.

Mason, of Snow Hill. won this event in 1965 and 1974 and was 3 up after a front nine of 39. She was one of the back nine.

Rankin, loser to Voss in the WDGA final, played the best golf of the day.

Wife of the Montgomery Village assistant pro Howard Rankin, she lost the first two holes to Marlowe's pars, but played the next 12 holes in one under par. Marlowe is daughter of Woodmont head pro, Tony Marlowe.

In a matchup od long hitters. Voss goes against Kenwood's Lisa Abood in today's 9 a.m. opener, followed by Bonnie Johnson of Maryland Golf and Country Club vs. Alice Kelley of Montgomery Village, Rankin vs. Karen Smith of Potomac Valley and Mason vs. Nancy Maunder of Crofton.

Two-time defending champions Mary Anne Battle and former titlist Joan Winchester were unable to play this year because of injuries. The tournament will end Friday.
