Six Washington-area men finished in the top eight places in C-1 slalom racing in the Pre-World Championship Canoe and Kayak Competition here yesterday. David Hearn of Gerrett Park took first place in the time of 202.27 seconds, on penalties.
The Americans made a spectacular showing in the first heat when they finished in first through fifth places, with Kent Ford III of Chevy Chase leading the pack. Ar the end of the second, and final, heat he had placed third.
Ron Lugbill of Fairfax, who teamed with Hearn to win Friday's C-2 wildwater race, came back from fifth position in the first heat to second place with an extremely smooth performance.
Fifth place was grabbed by Robert Robison of Fairfax. Sixth place went to Jamie McEwan, formerly of Washington and an Olympic bronze medalist in whitewater competition. He participated in the race here as a replacement for Angus Morrison, who was injured.
Jon Lugbill, who gave a crowd-pleasing performance with his tight turns, came in eighth.
In the K-1 women's race, Linda Harrison of Neward, Del., finished in first place while Cathy Hearn of Garrett Park took fourth place. Hearn, paddling with an injured shoulder, came in a strong second in the first heat, but appeared tired in the second last and slipped to fourth.
