Coach Joe Pascale hopes for an improved year from junior quarterback Steve Stanislav, who completed 85 passes but was intercepted 12 times last year as the Cardinals finished 5-4. Pascale will send in sophomore quarterback Lou Ruggiero when he wants to focus on the ground attack.
Pacing that attack will be wingback Sam Lofaro, whose 4.6-yard average per carry and six touchdowns led the Cardinals in 1977. Lofaro also returns punts and kickoffs, and led the Cardinals with a 22-yard pass-reception average. He will be sorely needed, since the starting fullback and halfback were lost through graduation.
The entire tackle-to-tackle offensive line returns, including tackles Dave DeMaio and 230-pound Brian Wickes, guards Robert Graham and Steve Richter and center Dave Higgins.
The Cardinal defense, which limited opponents to 13 points per game in 1977, lost six starters. Sophomore end Matt Burgess and junior tackle Mike McGowan head the returnees. Senior Terry Pallaggi and soph Mike hubert will flank junior Dan Joyce at linebacker. Joyce was impressive last year while replacing injured Mike Moriello.
Sophomore John Perkowski, who intercepted four passes and returned them 108 yards at left cornerback, heads a backfield with three positions up for grabs. Either Wickes or former soccer player Jim Wilton will do the placekicking; Tom Walsh will punt.
Freshman wide receiver Gerard Mcdonough and Pallotti High School linemen Rich Dumais and Frank Tesoriero head the list of newcomers.
