Meadow Bluffs Farm Ltd. and Charles P. Merrick III's yearling colt, Free Spirit, was named the breeding championduring the second day of competition yesterday at the Warrenton Horse Show.
Free Spirit was shown by Robert Burke and first won the yearling colt class before coming backto be named the champion over the other blue-ribbon winners in the breeding divison.
Free Spirit is a gray thoroughbred colt by Promotion out of Menulla. He has been the winner in his division at many shows this year and is leading for the national title awarded by the American Horse Show Association.
In the jumping competitions, Charlie Weaver, riding for the Cismont Manor Farm, won three classes. Weaver rode August A. Busch's Stocking Stuffer to victory in the regular confirmation. In the first class of the Green Working Hunter Division, Weaver rode Liz Johnson's two horses, Super Flash and Fun And Games to first and second place. All of Weaver's mounts are trained by Kenny Wheeler of Keswick, Va.
Weaver has been a competitor on the show circuit for the last six years when he first got his start in the show ring from Theodora Randolph. Since that time Weaver has gone on to win major championships.
Today's highlight will be the state finals for the equitation championship, with the show continuing through Monday.
