Trainer Melvin (Sunshine) Calvert made it three for three at the current Bowie meeting yesterday when he saddled Frances A. Genter's 3-year-old colt, Dr. Kim, in the featured Wells Corner purse. Dr. Kim won by two lengths over Dead Stick. Old Sea Dog ran third, a half-length behind Dead Stick.

Calvert, a former jockey, sent out two horses Monday to win in fast time. Dr. Kim's time for the Wells Corner was a moderate 1:26 1/5 for the seven furlongs. The son of In Reality paid $6.20 to win and was ridden by apprentice Thomas Kupfer.

Calvert said after the race: "I bought Dr. Kim's mother, Nilene Wonder, for Mrs. Genter 15 years ago in a sale. That mare has been good to us, throwing some useful horses."

Trainer Calvert lists among his many training accomplishments a second-place finish in the Preakness with In Reality, which won more than $700,000 in his career. Asked, if he had any promising youngsters, Calvert replied, "Yes. We've got some In Realitys and some others by solid stallions out of some fine mares. We've only got 12 horses, but some seem to be all right."
