Chief contention for the prmisins bay is expected to come from Lucy's Axe, a 2 1/2-length winner of his last a Belmont Park in a sizzling 1:22 4/3.

Ordinarily that time would practically assure the New York invader of being the favorite. However, it was accomplished in the first race of that afternoon and could be misleading.

Lucy's Axe will be ridden by Eddie Maple and will carry highweight of 122.

Another strong contender is Smanten, second to highly regarded General Assembly in the Saratoga Special, Smarten is trained by hall Of fame trainer Woody Stephens and totes 119 pounds.

Just about the time most back stretchers had given up on apparentice Ron Franklin, 19, because of some faulty rides, he shows remarkable improvement. The youngster has ridden 14 winners at this meeting, three-of which came in successive races last Monday. Significantly, all three were close.

The rail has been a bad position at this meeting. That observation was not easy to come by because the fators creating the bias toward the middle of the track were subtle. It all had to do with the watering trucks not passing directly over the inside part of the track. Relief is on its way.
