Chuck Fusina, the Heisman Trophy runner-up from top-ranked Penn State, and Rick Leach of Michigan were named NCAA coplayers of the year by the Pigskin Club of Washington last night at its annual awards banquet at the Capital Hilton.

Outland Trophy winner Greg Roberts of Oklahoma was honored as the lineman of the year.

Bo Schembechler of Michigan was named coach of the year.

Also honored for "outstanding achievement on the football field" was Charles Alexander of LSU.

Luther Banner of Dunbar High School was named metropolitan area high school coach of the year.

Also honored were Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference coach of the year Willie Jeffries of South Carolina State, MEAC player of the year Nate Rivers of South Carolina State, CIAA coach of the year William Hayes of Winston-Salem State and CIAA player of the year Timmy Newsome of Winston-Salem State.

Former Redskins Jerry Smith and Charley Taylor also were honored.

The Pigskin Club also gave awards to its 22-member All-Metropolitan high school team. Jeff Denney of Carroll High School received the Leonard Ford Junior Trophy as the area's outstanding defensive player.

The man who stole the show, however, was former Redskin Coach George Allen, who received a two-minute standing ovation when he was introduced.
