Andre Byrd made tow free throws with 20 seconds left in a second overtime tonight to earn Howard an 85-84 decision over the top-ranked NAIL team in the country, Norfolk State. Each squad now is 3-1.
Byrd, a sophomore, came on in relief to boast Howerd down the stretch, sinking four free throws in the last 30 seconds.
Larry Spriggs, also a sophomore, tipped in a missed Dorian Dent jump shot to give Howard an 83-82 lead.
Spriggs then hit Byrd on an outlet pass after a missed shot by Norfolk State and Byrd was fouled. Byrd sank the shots to give Howard an 85-82 lead with 10 seconds to play.
Howard's starting guards committed eight turnovers in the opening minutes and the Bison trailed, 19-7. Howard did not tie the game until 8:36 was left in regulation. 57-57.
Howard had four double-figure scorers led by Spriggs with 21 points (and 14 rebounds), Crlton Richardson 20 points, Dorian Dent 16 (and 14 rebounds) and Nathaniel Speight 10. Rochester in the consolation game.
Colgate trailed CU by six points at the half, 37-31, but managed to tie the score at 44 with 15:59 left. The Red Raiders pulled way to their biggest lead, 70-59, with 3:10 left.
Catholic's Steve Dade set a tournament record with 19 rebounds. He also took game scoring honors with 21.
