Center Kris Kirchner scored 28 points tonight to lead the Univcrsity of Maryland women's basketball team into the final of the first Orange Bowl tournament with an 85-73 victory over Tennessee.

The Terps, who drew a first-round bye, meet UCLA Saturday at 3 p. m. in the championship game of the sixteam, three-day tournament at Miami-Dade south. UCLA beat Penn State, 85-81, in the other semifinal. The semifinal losers meet in a 1 p. m. consolation game Saturday.

Kirchner led the Maryland scoring drive in the first half eith 20 points, all on field goals. With 6:22 remaining in the first half, the 6-foot-3sophomore scored on a layup that put Maryland ahead by nine points and Maryland expanded it to 44-32 at half.

The score had been tied five times in the early minutes of the game.

Maryland Coach Chris Weller said she wea looking forward to playing UCLA, which beat the Terrapins in the national championship game last season, but cautioned that her players would have to cut back on mistakes.

Maryland guard Betsy Bailey made two consecutive outside jump shots in the second half to put the Terps ahead by seven points with 8:13 remaining.
