Laurel Race Course closed the 1978 season on an upward note yesterday as 13,250 racing fans bet $1,745,750.

The E. Taylor Chewning Handicap was won by Perfect Daddy, who overcame what appeared to be an insurmountable lead by Big Punt, odds-on choice, in the stretch. Perfect Daddy was ridden by Danny Wright and paid $17.80 to win after running the mile in 1:38 1-5.

Trainers King T. Leatherbury and Richard Dutrow tied for top honors with 42 winners apiece this meeting. Jockey Thomas Kupfer led riders with 50 victories, three more than veteran Bill Passmore.

Racing will move to Bowie Monday with post time 1p.m. the six-horse field down the backstretch before Velasquez took her to the outside at the head of the stretch. On the drive for the wire, she passed the leading Whodatorsay and Sans Critique. She pulled away in the closing strides to win by a half-length in 1:45 1-5 for 1 1-16 miles over the inner dirt track.
