Virginia and American University face important league games at home tonight in a rather light area college basketball schedule.
Virginia can take over undisputed possession of second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a victory over Duke in an 8 o'clock game at University Hall in Charlottesville.
Duke, the preseason No. 1 pick in the national polls, and Virginia are each 3-1 in ACC play, one game behind North Carolina, 5-1.
American U. plays Drexel, 12-1, in an East Coast Conference game at Fort Myer. It is uncertain Stan Lamb, AU's leading scorer at 24 points per game, will be able to play tonight.
Lamb was ruled scholastically ineligible for the Eagles' last game, pending the makeup of incomplete grades from previous semesters. Coach Gary Williams was awaiting word from an AU dean on Lamb's fate last night and it is possible the guard will not play again this season, Williams said.
Both AU and Drexel are 5-1 in league play. The game is vital because first-round tournament sites are determined by regular-season records.
Catholic University (3-12) hosts Baltimore Loyola (9-7) at 8 o'clock in Brookland Gym.
