Furman forward A1 Daniel scored 29 points and led his team to an 83-70 upset of highly ranked North Carolina tonight.

The Tar Heels are ranked No. 4 by AP, No. 6 by UPI.

The Paladins held a 33-30 halftime lead, then outscored North Carolina, 18-8, over the first nine minutes of the second half.

North Carolina came back with eight straight points but Daniel hit 10 of Furman's next 12 points to move the Paladins out of danger. Furman pushed its lead to 15 by hitting nine of 12 free throws in the final two minutes.

The win boosted Furman to 15-5. Carolina is 15-4.

In the second game of the North-South doubleheader, Hawkeye Whitney scored 27 points while Clyde Austin added 17 and Tony Warren had 16 as North Carolina State bounced back from a first-half deficit to beat Virginit Tech, 97-88.

Saturday night the Carolina teams switch opponents.

N.C. State trailed by 10 at one point in the first half, and a 42-39 halftime deficit.

Forward Kendal Pinder put the Wolfpack (14-7) on top, 47-46, with 17:31 left in the game and N.C. State opened leads of up to 15.

Dale Solomon was high man for Virginia Tech (13-5) with 26 points.
