Robinson, advancing six wrestlers to today's semifinals, took a good grip on first place after the first day of the Northern Virginia Regional Wrestling Tournament yesterday at Hayfield.
The Northern District champion Rams accumulated 61 1/2 points for a 13-point cushion over West Springfield, which sent five wrestlers to the semis. Defending state champion Falls Church was third with 44 1/2 points, followed by Stuart and Fairfax with 37 1/2 each and Lee with 36.
Semifinals start today at noon and the championship matches will begin at 8 p.m.
There were only seven pins in the 48 quarterfinal bouts and three were by Rams. Bob DeProspero started the Rams off at 98 pounds with a pin of Jefferson's Gary Tobias in 4:43. At 105, Dan Yoo of Robinson scored a fall over W.T. Woodson's John Miller in 3:35.
Jeff Richardson, the only 1978 Virginia State champ in this tournament, Phil Boucher and Dana Dunlap triumphed at 145, 155, and 185, respectively for Robinson before the Rams' Bill Lawson pinned Francis Hassis of Annandale 53 seconds into the second period.
Although more than one opposing coach was prepared to concede the regional title to Robinson, Ram Coach John Epperly chose to be more cautious.
"We won't really know how we're doing until after the semifinals. Then we'll know where we stand," Epperly said. "I was very pleased with my team's performance. They really want it."
West Springfield, which trailed Lee by a point after the opening round yesterday, moved into the runner-up position behind a strong performance by its lightweights.
Jimmy Hennign (98), Chip McArdle (105), Chris Murnane (112) and Phil Sloan (119) all earned decisions for West Springfield and heavyweight David Chute highlighted the Spartains effort by recording the quarterfinals' quickest fall, pinning Stuart's Danny Zlotnik in 2:51.
Stuart advanced four wrestlers to the semis, with Phillip Cha (105), David Hjelm (112), Bill McQuail (155) and Kirby Wood (167) winning. Falls Church advanced Jim Meadows (132), Steve Passino (138) and Gary Harding (167).
