Picturesque, the odd-on favorite in yesterday's $75,000 Bowle Stakes, split horses in the stretch to score a driving victory over For Love And Glory at Bowie. Three Worthy held on to be third in the 1 1-16 mile event run in 1:47 2-5.
Picturesque was more than 18 lengths behind the leaders midway through the backstretch. With less than a quarter-mile to go the son of Native Royalty was still last but in high gear under jockey Ruben Hernandez. Approaching the eighth pole the winner's chore was made more difficult when his jockey lost his whip.
Below the 16th pole Picturesque was slapped several times left-handed by Hernandez and his forward charge carried him over the finish line three-quarters of a length in front.
The win was the fourth in five starts for Picturesque and brought the Harborview Farms entry's earnings over the $200,000 mark.
Asked if he felt his horse was ready for the likes of Spectacular Bid, trainer Jose Martin replied, "My goal is just to keep my horse winning. I never enter a horse in a race to finish second or third. He will run in the Wood Memorial, the Arkansas Derby and maybe the Kentucky Derby. We'll see."
"I was worried once we hit the first turn," said Hernandez. "I knew that my horse was not getting hold of the track. On the backside I had to hold back the urge to get into my horse because he wasn't in best stride. When I lost my whip I hit him with my hand and he showed his class."
