Bill Bolger smacked two home runs to help Catholic University build an early six-run advantage and the Cardinals held off George Washington, 9-6, in college baseball yesterball at Catholic.
Catholic now has won 10 consecutive games after losing its first seven of the spring season.
Bolger, a catcher, knocked in two runs with each homer as Reilly Shaughnessy scored ahead of him both times. Shaughnessy, who tripled in the first and walked in the third, gave Catholic a 7-1 lead in the fourth when his suicide-squeeze bunt scored Steven Conroy, who had tripled.
George Washington (12-4) rallied to within 7-6 with a five-run sixth inning, thanks mostly to a three-run homer by Jim Goss. The Colonials could get no closer against Shawn Conrad, wjo relieved agaisnt pitcher Miek Giglio (2-1) in the sixth and shut out GW the rest of the way.
At American University, James Jeffries' ninth-inning grand slam, his second home run of the contest, ralled the Eagles past the University of Baltimore, 9-6.
Jeffries drove in three runs with an eighth-inning homer and Louis Klepec followed with a solo round-tripper one out later to bring American (3-11) to within 6-5. Pinch runner Edgar Oliver, Darryl Mann and Bob Maxwell were on base in the ninth before Jeffries delivered his two-out game-winner to left center field.
In Miami, Fla., Howard split two games, defeating Buffalo, 3-18 at the University of Miami, before losing to host Florida International, 6-4 later in the day. Norman Howard's eight-inning home run highlighted the Bison win over Buffalo.
