Esther Alfonso of the Dayton (Ohio) Track Club ran the 400-meter hurdles for only the second time in her life yesterday and established world and American junior (under-17) records with a 58.1-second clocking in the Maryland Women's Open track meet at sunny Byrd Stadium.

Records were the order of the day. Eleven meet marks were established, two by former Olympians Paula Girven of Maryland in the high jump and Freida Nichols of the D. C. International Track Club in the 100-meter dash.

No team standings were kept in this seventh annual event, in which approximately 80 college and club teams were represented. However, two champions each were claimed by Pittsburgh, University of District of Columbia, Morgan State and Villanova.

Griven cleared 6 feet 2 inches, shattering the year-old AIAW record of 6-1 1/2 by Louise Ritter of UCLA. Then the 1976 U.S. Olympian failed on three tries, at 6-3 1/4, to break the American record of 6-3.

"I should have made it," said Girven, a Maryland senior. "Usually after I win a meet at about 6 feet, I try for the American record. But this time it seemed like just a little bit higher."

Nichols had a busy day, running in four events. The 1972 and 1976 Barbdos Olympian made up a 12-yard deficit in the anchor leg of the 400-meter relay, only to be beaten by a lean at the tape by Morgan State's Rhonda Yance; both teams posted times of 46 seconds flat.

Nichols, who lives in Landover and works at the Barbados Mebassy, qualified for the Pan-Am Games with a meet-record 11.4 in the 100-meter dash. She helped the 900-meter medley relay team take third and finished three-tenths of a second behind the meet-record 23.3 run by UDC's Liz Young in the 200-meter dash.

Chris Mullen of Georgetown turned in a 2:06.8 in the 800 meters, bettering the meet record of 2:12.2 set last year by Cynthia Wuss of Rutgers.

In the two-mile relay, Villanova broke Maryland's 1978 record by almost five seconds with 9:16. The Wildcats established a big early lead and Dorianne Lambelet had only Maryland's Joan Giebel to contend with on the final lap as third-place Georgetown finished nearly 26 seconds behind them.

Young and Peri Radecic of Pittsburgh were the meet's only double winners. Redecic won the discus with a 129-foot-6 throw and cleared a meet record by more than a foot and a half with a 46-foot heave in the shot put. Young set a meet record in the 400 meter dahs, 53.2.
