The operation on the left knee of Cap captain Guy Charron by Dr. Pat Palumbo is termed a success-but, look out, examination showed torn cartilage in his right knee, too.

Pending summer reexamination of what is described as a "small" tear, General Manager Max McNab of the hockey club said, "We don't want anyone to think we're being remiss by not operating on both knees at once. First off, there is a strong possibility that the right knee may not require surgery. Secondly, it is also extremely rare for a physician to operate on both knees at the same time since it makes the rehabilitation period that much more difficult."

Sonny Werblin, president of Madison Square Garden, confirms he met with Notre Dame's basketball coach Digger Phelps, in New York last week to discuss a possibile job situation with the NBA Knicks. Said Werblin: "We conferred . . . but there was no contract or money offer discussed. Both Red Holzman (coach) and Eddie Donovan (general manager) have time remaining on their contracts. Phelps was in town for a television audition to do a commercial. He called us and said he'd like to come down." The upshot, according to one report, may be a melding a year hence . . .
