Mike Moore's broken-bat single drove home the winning run with two out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Alexandria Mariners over the Peninsula Pilots, 7-6, last night at Four Mile Run Park.
Moore's third hit and third RBI of the game scored Ellwood Holland from third. Holland led off with a single. Jim Gabella's sacrifice bunt moved Holland to second and Tom Mee's ground out to second advanced him to third.
Left-handed Pilot reliever Manny Abreau then intentionally walked switche hitter Gary Pellant to face Moore, a left-handed hitter.
The Mariners trailed 4-0 in the second and 6-2 in the fifth, but chipped away until they tied it at 6 in the eighth when a single by John Randolph scored Moore from third.
A bench-clearing altercation resulted in the ejection of Alexandria's Chuck Lindsay and Peninsula's Greg Walker.
Lindsay was hit by a pitch from reliever Phil Teston, and when the two exchanged words as Lindsay walked down the baseline, Pilot first baseman Walker approached him.
After Mariner first base coach Mickey Bowers unsuccessfully tried to keep them apart, the teams poured onto the field, the pilots reaching the nearby scuffle first and dragging Lindsay to the ground.
Lindsay was replaced by Holland.
