George Andre of the host club eliminated two young power hitters, Larry Rentz of Crofton and Mike Manders of Congressional, to gain the quarter-finals of the District Amateur golf tournament yesterday at International.
Andre, a 41-year-old commericial airline pilot, birdied the first three holes against Rentz, played two-under-par golf and won, 3 and 2, in the morning.
In the afternoon, Andre exploded out of a sand trap for birdie on the lead and went on to beat Manders, 2 and 1.
Medalist Tony DeLuca of Chantilly took advantage of four three-putt greens by Mike McCarthy to defeat greens by Mike McCarthy to defeat in the morning. In the afternoon, DeLuga's big game picked up. The University of Florida player won the ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th holes, two with birdies, to best Terry Burke of Congressional, 3 and 2.
Henri deLozier of Columbia struggled past Mike Bittman of Congressional 2 and 1, in the first round. In the afternoon, in what had been anticipated to be a close match, the long-hitting attorney was two under par and overwhelmed Dave King of Bethesda, 6 and 5.
In this morning's quaterfinal pairings starting at 8:03, DeLuca plays Andre, followed by deLozier versus Paul Ryan of Congressional, Greg Carpousis of Army Navy versus Black and Dicky Leggin of Congressional versus Van Pelt.
