A bases-loaded double by Mike Moore keyed a five-run fourth inning and gave the Alexandria Mariners a 5-4 victory over the Lynchburg Mets in the nightcap and a split of a Carolina League doubleheader last night at Four Mile Run Park. The Mets won the first game, 5-1.

With one out and the Mariners trailing, 4-0, Tom Mee and Jim Gabella both singled and Tito Nanni walked. Met starter Alex Coghen then walked Rodney Hobbs to force in the first run. Moore greeted reliever Keith Shermeyer with a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center field. Kyle Koke knocked in Moore with the winning run on a single to right.

The win went to reliever Mark Batten (3-4), who went 3 1/2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. The victory halted Alexandria's five-game losing streak.

In the first game, Lynchburg broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the sixth. John Elder doubled, and scored on singles by Dave Howard and Charlie Warren. After a sacrifice bunt by Jim Noonan, Howard scored on a pinch hit single by Jeff Gossett, and Warren came across on a suicide squeeze executed by Ed Cuervo.
