Jose Sosa, Maryland's highly touted junior college transfer, may not play for the Terrapins this season, basketball Coach Lefty Driesell said yesterday.
Sosa, a 6-foot-3 guard from Mercer (N.J.) Community College, is still in Puerto Rico even though classes at Maryland started Wednesday.
"IM not optimistic that he's going to make it here right now," Driesell said. "I'm still hoping he'll be here because he's a very good player. But right now, I'm not counting on it.He still has some things to work out before he can register here."
Reportedly, Sosa has a problem having credits transferred.
A native of Puerto Rico, Sosa was being counted on to add quickness and driving ability to the Terps. Driesell has four of last season's guards returning -- Dutch Morley, Greg Manning, Ernest Graham and Reggie Jackson.
Driesell had hoped to move the 6-7 Graham back to his natural postion, forward, with the addition of Sosa.
"Things may still work out," Driesell said. "But as of now he's not here and it doesn't look that good for him getting in here anytime soon."
Driesell also said 6-11 sophomore center Taylor Baldwin, who he is hoping can fill the void at center left by Larry Gibson's departure, reported to school weighing 218 pounds -- 27 pounds lighter than his playing weight as a freshman.
