Local favorite Jefferson Pop, fresh from a victory in the Tri-State Prep Oct. 10, will try to head off stakes veteran Pillar Point in Saturday night's 18th running of the $63,500 Tri-State Futurity for 2-year-olds at Charles Town Turf Club.
Pillar Point, Jefferson Pop and Passthebuck O'Shay head the 12-horse field which will race for a winner's share of $50,400 and more than $4,300 in breeder awards. The seven-furlong event is open to Virginia-, Maryland- and West Virginia-breds and will go off at approximately 11 p.m.
Owned by Ruth C. Funkhouser, Jefferson Pop scored a three-quarters length victory in the Tri-State Prep, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:21 2/5 on a muddy track. Bold Gen and Beau Legs Devil, both entries in Saturday's Futurity, finished fourth and ninth in the Prep.
Pillar Point, third in the Sept 15 running of the Frolic Handicap at Timonium, will be facing the seven furlong distance for the first time. Philip Grove, a former Charles Town jockey who has been riding on the Maryland circuit, will return to West Virginia to ride Pillar Point.
Pillar Point has drawn the second post position, while Passthebuck O'Shay will leave from Post 8 and Jefferson Pop from Post 10.
