Attention, Caps: Veteran Boston winger Bobby Schmautz has been dropped from a road trip and put on the trading block, evidently through as a Bruin.
Schmautz has been a consistent 20-goal scorer the past five seasons -- even now an eight-goal six-assist man despite relegation to 10th forward by Coach Fred Creighton. General Manager Harry Sinden passed the word after Schmautz was quoted as saying Creighton's system "is not conductive to winning hockey . . . We're not getting enough ice time."
He's been saying it since Creighton took over this year, but it came to a head after deposed Bruin Coach Don Cherry came in with his Colorado Rockies and won in Boston Garden Sunday night, 5-3. "We were outcoached," chortled Schmautz.
Bud Wilkinson wanted to attend the Cardinal-49er game Sunday in St. Louis, but the coach fired last week "knew if I went there was no way I could avoid all the photographers and the media. So I stayed home and listened to the radio. I was very proud of what I heard." And prouder still in the aftermath of the 13-10 Card victory (even if it was Jim Hart-less).
Said Larry Wilson, the interim coach: "There was only one game ball awarded and it went to Bud Wilkinson". . . .
George Washington's celebration of that Eastern Eight basketball package that hastened the conference's exit from the ECAC has been tempered a bit. No local outlet, what with WDCA-TV-20 deciding "counterprogramming" the better option in view of a plethora of college dribbling on the weekend tube. . . . But WTOP-1500 adds to its heavy radio sports bundle U. of Virginia basketball via Charlottesville pickup, when it doesn't conflict with Bullets, Caps and other commitments; about half the Cav games, starting with the Dec. 22 Cable Car Classic . . .
