American University will attempt to end a two-game losing streak tonight when the Eagles host St. Mary's in an 8 p.m. contest at Fort Myer Gymnasium.
Lafayette and James Madison defeated AU to drop Coach Gary Williams' club to 2-3. The Eagles will be without forward Leon Kearney and guard Chris Dye, out with ankle injuries.
St. Mary's (2-4), coming off a 104-67 loss to William and Mary, must contend with Russell (Boo) Bowers, who is leading the Eagles in scoring (25.8), rebounds (6.5) and assists.
A different kind of streak is on the line, or rather field, for Georgetown's Craig Shelton. The 6-foot-7 senior forward has connected on his last 19 field goal attempts and is seven shy of breaking the mark set last season by American's Ray Voelkel.
Shelton, dubbed "Big Sky" for his high-flying feats at Dunbar High School, hit his last two shots against Maryland to begin the streak, and converted 18 of 18 shots in a win over St. Leo and a loss at Indiana.
The Hoyas open the Nike Cage Classic against Loyola-Marymount (Calif.) Saturday, with Houston and suspension-riddled New Mexico in the nightcap at Albuquerque.
Shelton has made 25 baskets in 28 tries, an .893 shooting percentage.
