Al Leslie, a junior guard from Baltimore, scored a school-record 45 points tonight as Bucknell routed American University, 105-89, in an East Coast Conference game at Davis Gymnasium.
The 6-foot-3 Leslie shot 16 for 26 from the floor and 13 of 14 from the line and became the ninth player in Bucknell history to score 1,000 points.
Bucknell, defending champion of the ECC's Western Division, improved its record to 6-2 and 3-0 in the conference. The Eagles fell to 6-6 and 1-2. Bucknell has won 18 in a row at home.
AU led, 22-16, with 11:46 remaining in the first half before the Bison went on a 21-4 tear to take a 37-26 lead with six minutes to play in the half. Leslie led the burst with 10 points.
AU closed to within four points at 47-43 but the Bison scored the final four points of the first half and the first six of the second to take a 57-43 edge. After a Boo Bowers basket for the Eagles, Bucknell went on an 11-5 burst to take a commanding 68-50 edge. The closest AU could come after that was 10 points.
Bowers scored 30 points, making 12 of 19 shots from the field and six of seven from the line. He became the fifth leading scorer in AU history with 1,391. Bowers moved ahead of Leroy Ishman and Calvin Brown.
Bucknell, which shot 39 of 61 for 64 percent from the field, also received 20 points from Bob Barry and 16 points from Steve Sigl. Bob Harvey chipped in with 19 points and was the Eagles' leading rebounder with eight.
