Bjorn Borg broke Vijay Amritraj's service in the second game of the third set and went on to a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory in the opening round of the $200,000 WCT Invitational today.

Borg was scheduled to meet Jose Higueras of Spain in the evening's third match but was switched to the opening match when Higueras withdrew with a knee cartilage injury.

Borg opened the third set serving well and held service. With the score 15-30 in the second game, Armitraj lost a point by hitting long. Borg won the game moments later on a lob.

Borg the No. 1-ranked player in the world, was in command most of the way in his first appearance in Salisbury.

In night matches, Jimmy Connors defeated Eddie Dibbs, 6-4, 6-4, and Ilie Nastase downed John Alexander, 7-6, 6-2, carrying the first set tie breaker, 10-8.

Connors, dedicated to regaining the No. 1 ranking he held for nearly six years, broke in the ninth game of the first set against Dibbs, then again in the fifth game of the second set, each time following a trade of service breaks.

Trimmed to 150 pounds, Connors has lost to Borg seven straight times, but could meet him twice in this tournament. Their first scheduled match is Friday night.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
